Carmarthen

Carmarthen ( Welsh Caerfyrddin ) is the capital of the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is located on the right bank of the river Towy 13 kilometers north of its confluence with the Carmarthen Bay and has 20,000 inhabitants.

History

The story goes back to Carmarthen in the days when Britain was a Roman province. At that time it was called the Maridunum. Maybe Carmarthen is the oldest town in Wales, it is mentioned by Ptolemy and in the Antonine Itinerary. The Roman fortress can still be seen today and probably dates from the years 75-77. Not far from the fortress, there is Maridunum Demetarum, one of the seven amphitheater in Britain, it was excavated in 1968. The arena measures 46 to 27 meters, the entire theater is 92 meters long and 67 meters wide.

Because of the strategic importance of Carmarthen, the Anglo-Normans built a castle around 1094. After the plant was destroyed in 1215, took place in 1223, a new building including a fortified city wall, was possibly Carmarthen in the Middle Ages, the first place in Wales, which was equipped with such a defense. Nevertheless, Owain Glyndwr took the city in 1405 a.

In the 16th and 17th centuries Carmarthen of agriculture, especially the cultivation, and the trade was marked with wool. Middle of the 18th century won the trade in iron and coal in importance.

The city is one of the strongholds of Plaid Cymru (Welsh Party of Wales), a center -left party, which describes itself as socialist and Welsh nationalist.
