Casino (New South Wales)

Casino is a town in the far northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales. The city on the Richmond River is located approximately 22 kilometers west of Lismore, 726 kilometers north of Sydney and 228 kilometers south of Brisbane. Casino is the administrative center of the Local Government Area Richmond Valley Council and was in the 2006 census, a population of 9,400.

Origin of the name

The city was named after the casino station, a sheep station of Clarke Irving, named. This, in turn, named his estate after the Italian town of Cassino. There is a community partnership between the two cities.

Economy

Casino is one of the main centers of production of beef in Australia. The city is the center of a large cattle breeding territory and refers to himself as the " beef capital of Australia ", although the city Rockhampton claimed the same for themselves. She is also the regional center of a rich agricultural area.

Every year celebrates the Casino Beef Week, only 2007 had to be canceled because of the drought. 2008 Beef Week was held until June 3, from 27 May.

Traffic

Casino is located at the intersection of the Bruxner Highway (Australian Route 44) to the Summerland Way ( State Road 91).

The station is located on the North Coast Line from Sydney to Brisbane, north of Grafton. A branch line ran from here via Lismore to Murwillumbah. At present, this branch line is closed down, but the population calls for a re-commissioning. Casino is also the end point of the daily Countrylink XPT connection Casino to and from Sydney. Even after Brisbane there is a daily train (Brisbane XPT).

In the 1920s, they began the construction of a railway line to Bonalbo (about 45 km west-northwest of the casino ). This line was never completed.

The nearby airport Lismore there are daily several flights to Sydney.

In Casino there are many schools. The most important are the Casino High School, the Casino Public School, the Casino West Public School, St Mary's Primary School, St Mary's High School and the Casino Christian Community School.
