Chad Basin National Park

The National Park Chad Basin is located in northeastern Nigeria, covering an area of 2258 km ² in the states of Yobe and Borno. It consists of three geographically separate protection zones, the Chingurmi - Duguma area, the bath - Nguru wetlands and the Bulatura area. These include different biotopes of the Chad Basin, lying in semi-arid and humid over arid areas.

Chingurmi - Duguma area

The zone of the National Park in the state of Borno covers an area of 1,228 km ² and is located on the border with Cameroon, near the Waza National Park. The vegetation corresponds in large parts of the the Western Sudan savanna merges into the vegetation zone of the Sahel acacia savannah in the north of the park. The predominant tree species are Acacia, Osher ( Calotropis procera), Anogeissus leiocarpus, Wüstendattel ( Balanites aegyptiaca ) and the Stinkbaum Sterculia setigera.

The area is crossed by the seasonally flowing river Dorma, in the rainy season it floods larger areas which form the habitat of the Kutila Fadama. The most common trees in this habitat belong to the plant Mitragyna inermis.

At larger mammals live in this area of the National Park Rotstirngazelle ( Gazella rufifrons ), the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and during the rainy season, the giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis), which applies in the rest of Nigeria to be extinct.

Bathing - Nguru wetlands

This area of the National Park lies in the Hadejia - Nguru wetlands, covering an area of 928 km ², which are formed by the rivers Hadeija and Jama'are in Budendesstaat Yobe. The core area of this protection zone forms the Dagona water bird sanctuary, around the Nguru Lake.

The bath - Nguru wetlands located in the vegetation belt of the Sahel acacia savannah of the Sahel, with its annual rainfall of 200 to 600 mm / m². It can be found in the area three specific main vegetation types. The first is the shrub savanna, which propagates in the higher areas. The second is called Tudu, which is spreading to sandy soils and crossed by a large number of ponds. The predominant tree species are Anabaum (Acacia albida ), Ziziphus species, the Wüstendattel ( Balanites aegyptiaca ), tamarind tree ( Tamarindus indica) and the African baobab (Adansonia digitata ). In the understory grasses Cenchrus biflorus, the, Andropogon species and Vetiveria find nigritana. To gallery forests stretch on the floodplain, regionally referred to as Kumri forests from. These consist mainly mespiliformis from the tree Khaya senegalensis species, Mitragyna inermis and Diospyros. In some areas the Kumri forests have been replaced by plantations of mango ( Mangifera indica) and Real guava ( Psidium guajava ). The third type of vegetation propagates in the flooded areas and is regionally known as Fadama. The main tree species are Acacia nilotica and Doumpalme ( Hyphaene thebaica ). Large areas of grass spread in the flood plains of the dominant species are Echinochloa and Oryza species in drier areas of the Fadama vegetation there are the grasses Dactyloctenium aegyptium, Setaria spp and Cyperus species. The higher than a man Typha australis and Mimosa pigra growing on the shores of the lakes.

The great international importance of this part of the national park highlighted the visits of ambassadors of WWF, Bernhardt of the Netherlands and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1987, and Prince Charles and Lady Diana in 1990., The 1010.95 km ² Baturiya Wetlands Game reserve and 581 km ² Nguru Lake (and Marma channel ) complex were included in the list of Wetlands of International Importance of the Ramsar Convention in 2008.

Bulatura area

This area of the National Park is located on the border of landlocked Niger and covers an area of 92 km ². It is a desert -like area which is covered by sand dunes and oases, and thus represents a unique habitat for Nigeria.

Trivia

1999 was proposed by the government of the state of Borno, the hunting reserve Sambisa to integrate Game Reserve in the National Park, this project has not been fully implemented. The Sambisa Game Reserve is administratively managed by the National Park though, but is not legally part of the National Park.
