Charles, Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal-Barchfeld

Karl August Ludwig Philipp of Hesse- Philippsthal - Barchfeld (* June 27, 1784 in Barchfeld; † July 17, 1854 in Philip Thal ) was Landgrave of Hesse - Philippsthal - Barchfeld out of the house of Hesse.

Life

Charles was a son of the Landgrave of Hesse- Adolf Philipp Thal- Barchfeld (1743-1803) from his marriage to Louise (1752-1805), daughter of Duke Anton Ulrich von Sachsen- Meiningen. He succeeded his father in 1803 as Landgrave of Hesse - Philippsthal - Barchfeld. First, in the Prussian service, he joined the Russian military service and fought on the Russian side in the Napoleonic Wars, among others, at the Battle of Borodino.

After he resigned from the Russian military service, he was promoted in 1836 to lieutenant general Hessian services. Charles later lived at Castle Augustenau in Herleshausen.

Progeny

Karl married on July 19, 1816 in Öhringen first wife Auguste ( 1793-1821 ), daughter of Prince Friedrich Ludwig of Hohenlohe- Ingelfingen, with whom he had the following children:

  • Emilie (1821-1836)

His second wife was on September 10, 1823 in Steinfurt Sophie ( 1794-1873 ), daughter of Prince Ludwig Wilhelm Ernst Geldricus of Bentheim and Steinfurt, with whom he had the following children:

  • Viktor (1824-1846)
  • Alexander (1826-1841)
  • Alexis (1829-1905), Landgrave of Hesse - Philippsthal - Barchfeld
