Charlestown, County Mayo

Charlestown ( Irish: Baile Chathail ) is a town in County Mayo in the west of Ireland.

Charlestown is located far to the east of the county Mayo, almost on the border with County Sligo, a few kilometers from County Roscommon. It was the middle of the 19th century built directly adjacent to the location in County Sligo Bellaghy; as the initiative proceeded to do so by the city planners of a Viscount Dillon, the place was originally named in English Newtown - Dillon. At the 2006 Census lived in Charlestown and Bellaghy together 859 people.

The notoriety of Charlestown is primarily due to the small town at the intersection of two main roads first order is: The running from east to west N5 Longford ( in extension of the N4 from Dublin) to Castlebar / Westport from central Mayo intersects with that of running north to south N17 from Sligo Town to Galway City. Until the opening of a bypass in the course of N5 end of 2007, which led to constant traffic jams in the ground; the busy N17 crosses Charlestown however, will continue.

On the rail transport in Ireland, the town is no longer connected. 5.6 km south of Charles Town on the N17, however, is the Knock Airport. The nearest larger town is Swinford in a westerly direction in the course of N5.
