Château-des-Prés

Château -des- Prés is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Château -des- Prés is located 942 m above sea level. M., about twelve kilometers north of the town of Saint- Claude ( a straight line ). The village is located in the Jura, on a broad plateau between the valley of Bienne and the Lac de l' Abbaye, on Südwestfuß of Mont d' Ecuvet, north of Combe de Laume.

The area of ​​8.62 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The landscape has only small differences in relief and is characterized by parallel ridges and terrain sinks that are oriented in the southwest-northeast direction according to the strike of the Jura Mountains in the area. In structural geological terms, they represent a series of anticlines and synclines, which consist predominantly of rock strata of the upper Jurassic period.

The western part of the municipality is drained by the creek Loutre, but the seeps within a few kilometers. The rest of the community area shows no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the porous limestone substrate. Neighboring communities of Château -des- Prés are Grande- Rivière in the north, Lézat in the east, Villard -sur -Bienne in the south and Chaux -des- Prés in the West.

History

The first written record is not saved, but is believed that the name Castaniacum in a document of Emperor Lothar I of 855 today Château -des- Prés was meant. The name changed in the episode about Castrum de Prati, Chatel and Chastel- of - Prelz to the current spelling.

The area belonged to the dominion of the Abbey of Saint -Claude. In order to defend themselves against attacks from nearby kingdoms, the abbot in 1240 at Château -des- Prés built a castle. So the place was the center of a Kastlanei which was dependent on Saint -Claude and the neighboring village of Chaux -des- Prés included. In 1436 the sovereignty over the territory was handed over to the Free County of Burgundy by a parliamentary vote by the abbot. Together with the Franche- Comté reached Château -des- Prés with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The village of Saint-Georges Church was rebuilt in 1822. At the hamlet of Les Frasses is a country chapel. From the medieval castle on the Mont d' Ecuvet ruins remain.

Population

With 183 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Château -des- Prés is one of the small towns in the Jura. Throughout the 20th century the population was always in the range of approximately 170 people.

Economy and infrastructure

Château -des- Prés was well into the 20th century, a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially livestock and dairy farming, as well as by the forestry village. The village is located off the major thoroughfares of the secondary road D437, which runs from Saint -Claude Saint- Laurent -en- Grandvaux. Further road links exist with Chaux -des- Prés and Lézat.
