Chen (state)

Chen (Chinese陈) was a small state in the Western Zhou dynasty and the time of the Spring and Autumn Annals in China. Its territory consisted of the environment of a town near the present-day Huaiyang (Henan province). At that time, Chen was the border to the state of Chu.

The ruling family of Chen claimed descent from Emperor Shun. King Wu is after the subjugation of the Shang Dynasty around 1046 BC the potter Gui Man (妫 满) have awarded the fief Chen, who was said to be a descendant of Emperor Shun.

Chen later became a satellite state of Chu and fought as his ally in the battle of Chengpu. In the year 479 BC Chen was eventually annexed by Chu. After the destruction of the Chu capital Ying Chen was for a time the capital of Chu.
