The third-largest German lake

The Chiemsee [ ki ː MIE ː ], as the "Bavarian Sea", with an area of 79.9 km ², the largest lake in Bavaria and by Lake Constance and Lake Müritz, the third largest lake in Germany ( Lake Starnberg, however, has a larger volume of water ).

The Chiemsee has a volume of 2.04784 billion m³ with a circumference of 63.96 km ( shoreline with islands 83 km). The catchment area is 1398.56 km ², of which 605 km ² in Bavaria. The islands in the lake are Herrenchiemsee (238 ha ), Mrs. island ( 15.5 ha) and herb island ( 3.5 ha), which together form the municipality of Chiemsee, as well as the unincorporated island Schalch (22 m²).

It is conjectured that the lake, the place Chieming and the entire Chiemgau were named after a count named Chiemo.

Development

The Chiemsee was like many other pre-alpine lakes at the end of the last ice age about 10,000 years ago as Ausschürfung a glacier ( Zungenbeckensee ). Originally, the lake covered an area of nearly 240 square kilometers, which is about three times the present water surface. Within 100 years, the water level fell by about 200 ha, the water level was lowered by approximately one meter before 1904. This large areas were drained.

Lake and surroundings

The largest tributary of the lake is the Tiroler Achen, the only outlet of the Alz. The Tiroler Achen and Prien inflows flush sand and debris into the lake so that it slowly silted up.

The landscape around the lake Chiemsee, Chiemgau, is one of the most popular recreation areas in Bavaria. The scenic charm of the Chiemsee lake created by the close proximity of the Chiemgau mountains ( Hochfelln, Hochgern, high plate and Kamp wall). The lake is under the protection of the international Ramsar Convention.

The lake is known primarily for two of his three major islands: On the women's island there is a nunnery. Even better known is the Lord island on which there are two locks: a landscape park with the Old Castle ( a former convent ) and the Neues Schloss Herrenchiemsee of the " Fairy Tale King " Ludwig II, which is modeled after the Palace of Versailles. The third island - Krautinsel - is uninhabited. There are also three very small islands: The Schalch west of the island and two unnamed woman, tree-covered islets 54 and 80 meters south of the island herb, each with a few square meters.

To the west, north of the island Lord, the Chiemsee is divided by deep bays, from west to east:

  • Washed sheep / Aiterbacher angle ( in the south Grünmanndl angle)
  • Kailbacher angle
  • Muehlner angle

Between these bays peninsulas projecting into the lake.

The Chiemsee is divided into the larger, open Weitsee in the northeast ( with the Chieminger bay to the east ) and in the Island Lake in the southwest. While the three larger islands form the municipality of Chiemsee and belong to the district of Rosenheim, almost the entire lake is a unincorporated territory of the district of Traunstein forms (water surface ) with the tiny island Schalch and with some Schwemmlandinseln in the delta of the Tiroler Achen The Irschener angle, a small bay in the south at the mouth of the Bernauer Ache, belongs to the municipality Bernau am Chiemsee. The Aiterbacher angle, a small bay in the southwest part of the community Rimsting. The county boundary runs exactly on the western shore of the lake, with deviations in the aforementioned bays. The lake is owned by the Free State of Bavaria, for the management of which is the Bavarian Administration State-owned Palaces, Gardens and Lakes in charge.

On 24 November 1989, the ring sewer was opened at the Chiemsee to a total cost of 280 million DM. Before the construction of the annular channel annually flowed around 115 tonnes of phosphate in the lake. The two branches of the 68 -kilometer pipeline to meet in Prien. From there, the wastewater is sent to a wastewater treatment plant 4.5 kilometers away, then it flows 9 miles to the Inn.
