The district ( Neighborhood) Chinatown (traditional characters :波士顿 唐人街, alternatively波士顿 华埠) is located in downtown Boston, Massachusetts in the United States and is the only historic Chinese area in New England.

Geography

The characteristic entrance to Chinatown ( a Pailou with a guardian lions on each side) is located at the intersection of Beach Street and Surface Road. As part of the Big Dig project, a park was created at this point. The gate is clearly visible from the bus station at Boston South Station and a popular attraction for tourists.

Expansion of the urban area

The district is located along Beach Street and is bounded by the Boston Common, the districts of Downtown Crossing and the South End, and by Interstate 93.

Boroughs

More recently, about 10 mi ( 16.09 km ) south of the district has established a satellite city of the same name at the Hancock Street in nearby Quincy. The new district is mainly inhabited by Hokkien -speaking Chinese immigrants from Fujian Province and of the exiled Vietnamese. There are already some large Asian markets and other businesses that are in competition with the original Chinatown. Therefore, many businesses from Chinatown branches have opened in Quincy.

History

Population Development

A part of Chinatown is located on land that was won in the course of Landaufschüttung and initially settled by white Anglo-Saxon Protestants. Once the land has been disappearing in this area by the progressive railway development in value, attracted migrants consisting of Irish, Jews, Italians, Syrians and Chinese in the quarter. They took advantage of the fallen house prices and good job opportunities in the district. During the late 19th century, textile factories moved into the district and formed as the today 's historic Garment District, which was still in operation until the 1990s.

In 2000 lived 6,015 people in the district, which is inhabited for more than twice as dense with a population density of 28 136 persons per square mile as Boston itself 69 % of the population is Asian, followed by whites ( 17%), Black ( 7%) and Hispanics ( 5%). The median household income was 14,829 U.S. dollars, the average age of 35.1 years. 60 % of residents have no high school diploma.

Culture and sights

Structures

The Hayden Building is a historic building at the address 681-683 Washington Street and was designed in 1875 by Henry Hobson Richardson. In 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Specialty

Chinatown is still the center of Asian-American life in New England and is home to many Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants and markets.

Economy and infrastructure

Traffic

In Chinatown, there are several local and regional transport links. The district is served by the Red Line and Silver Line of the MBTA as well as allowing commuter trains at Boston South Station and the Orange Line to be used at the station Chinatown. Interstate 93 and the Massachusetts Turnpike are also close by. The two bus lines Fung Wah and Lucky Star / Travel Pack offer hourly connections to Chinatown in New York City.

Media

, The World Journal - Boston Edition is the largest and most -read daily newspaper in the district. The non-profit newspaper Sampan is published twice a month in English.

Public institutions

The Tufts Medical Center occupies a large part of the area of the district. It has a hospital and several educational institutions in the health Tufts University, including the Tufts University School of Medicine, the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

The South Cove Community Health Center founded in 1972 to better care for Asian Americans maintains the Chinatown Clinic on Washington Avenue.
