Chironico

Chironico

Chironico was until March 31, 2012, a municipality in the district of Faido in the district of Leventina in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

Merger with Faido

On April 1, 2012, it merged with the municipalities Anzonico, Calpiogna, Campello, Cavagnago, Mairengo and Osco to the existing community Faido.

Geography

Chironico lies on a terrace at the entrance of Val Chironico, which is a right tributary of the Valle Leventina. The municipality also includes the villages Grumo far from Chironico itself and Nivo on Ticino river across from Lavorgo.

The road to Chironico leaves at Lavorgo bottomed out and leads through chestnut woods up the hill to the village.

The terrace on which Chironico located, was built in prehistoric times as a result of a huge landslide on the opposite side of the valley. This broke up the left slope of Leventina in the place where Anzonico is today, and so blocked the Ticino river, which had to find a new way and in this way formed the Biaschina Gorge.

The uninhabited and partly overgrown Val Chironico is drained by the river Ticinetto. The hamlet Osadigo lie to their slopes (consisting of Mun, Löita and Garnei ), Cala, Doro, Ces ' Frecc, Gramonenc ' and Olina. Only Osadigo is year-round inhabited and farmed by a goat farmer. The rest is still used in the summer months by the descendants of former residents as a weekend and summer stay. However, there are a variety of efforts, the former cultivated land, so to preserve the terraces the total landscape through sustainable use, or partially revive. Between Doro and Ces is the bog Varenc, which was added to the list of moorlands of National importance.

Gribbio, the last hamlet belonging to Chironicos pastures, is another small side valley of the Valle Leventina. Gribbio is unlike Osadigo, Cala, Doro, Olina and Ces accessible by a motorable road from Chironico or Dalpe ago, what has it not prevented from being abandoned by its inhabitants.
