Choux

Choux is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Choux is located at 830 m above sea level. M., about twelve kilometers southwest of the town of Saint- Claude ( a straight line ). The farming village extends in the Jura, on a saddle east of the valley of Longviry, on the western edge of the plateau of the Hautes- Combes.

The area of ​​8.29 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the 1.5 -kilometer-wide saddle of Choux, which is oriented in the southwest-northeast direction. In geological terms, it forms the disrupted by erosion crest of a anticline Jura folds. The saddle sinks towards the north-east to the valley of Vulvoz, to the southwest of the valley of the Longviry (tributary of Bienne ), where the western boundary of the municipality along the creek runs. History

The discovery of a Roman coin hoard in 1837 suggests that the municipality of Choux was inhabited very early. Is first mentioned in the 12th century as a Choux possession of the Abbey of Saint -Claude. In the 13th century the village was the site of a hospital for lepers. In the context of disputes between the Franche -Comté and France Choux was sacked in the 17th century by French troops. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Population Development

With 123 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Choux is one of the smallest towns in the Jura. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1901 310 persons were still counted ), a population increase was recorded since the mid- 1980s again.

Attractions

The present village church of Choux was built in 1861 on the site of an earlier building dating from the 16th century.

Economy and infrastructure

Choux was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially livestock and dairy farming, as well as by the forestry village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in the community. Many workers are also commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads to Belleydoux of Molinges in the valley of Bienne. Further road links exist with Viry and Les Bouchoux.
