History

Before the start of CMT Canada in 1994 ran a U.S. company, the Country Television Network since 1984 in Canada. In June 1994, awarded by the Canadian regulatory body, the Canadian Radio - Television and Telecommunications Commission ( CRTC ), multiple transmit licensing of niche channels, including a music channel, which should send especially country music. It was provided that the transmission schedule consisted of 90 % of music videos, and 10% of moderated items and shows. The first broadcasting license for a Canadian country music station, has been awarded to Maclean -Hunter and Rawlco Communications, which should operate in partnership the transmitter.

Before the station launched, MacLean -Hunter was acquired by Rogers Communications. On 1 January 1995, the station officially went under the name of New Country Network ( NCN) on the air. Since the day it was forbidden for cable operators to offer the U.S. channel Country Music Television. Due to the withdrawal of the transmitter rights in Canada, the operator submitted a formal complaint against the CRTC, as this contradicted the agreement, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA ). Therefore, the U.S. stations boycotted the music videos of Canadian Country musicians on their shafts.

In the course of the nineties, the Canadian Radio - Television and Telecommunications Commission ( CRTC ) issued by its domestic stations to protect them from foreign competition, a policy that stated that when a Canadian specialty stations has received its broadcasting license and the transmitter or the broadcasting system directly is also offered by a foreign competitor and thus in competition, the foreign broadcasters the right to broadcast in Canada must be withdrawn. After months of negotiations, an agreement was found, which appeared acceptable to both sides. In order for the U.S. americans again received a transmission license in Canada, they had to participate in the Canadian stations. So the transmitter NCN has been restarted on 31 October 1996 under the name of CMT Canada. Shaw Communications held the largest stake in the company, which was later transferred to the subsidiary, Corus Entertainment in 1999. This dispute led to the amendment of the CRTC guidelines. So it was decided that even if a Canadian station goes on the air new, then must the competing foreign broadcasters already in Canada has a transmission authorization, its send operation is no longer set.
