Colin Campbell (Canadian bishop)

Colin Campbell KHCS ( born July 12, 1931 in Antigonish, † January 17, 2012 in Halifax ) was a Canadian clergyman and Roman Catholic Bishop of Antigonish.

Life

Colin Campbell studied at the Saint Mary's University Halifax and received in Halifax on May 26, 1956, ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Halifax. After pastoral work he became the first Director of Social Services of the Archdiocese of Halifax. He was for 11 years vicar general of the diocese, and taught at several schools, such as the Maritime School of Social Work. He was a columnist for the newspapers The Casket ( Antigonish ) and the The Chronicle Herald and dealt with social issues. He was spiritual director of the seminary of Saint Augustine in Toronto.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 12 December 1986 as Bishop of Antigonish. The Archbishop of Halifax, James Martin Hayes, gave him on 19 March of the next year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Donat Chiasson, Archbishop of Moncton, and William Edward Power, Bishop Emeritus of Antigonish.

He was also Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of Canada - Atlantic Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem. He was Ehrenkonventualkaplan Order of Malta.

Campbell was 14 years a member of the Board of Governors (Board of Governors ) of the Saint Mary's University Halifax and its chairman from 1978 to 1983. In 2011 he was honored with an honorary doctorate, especially for his involvement in the founding of the Atlantic School of Theology and the implementation the Second Vatican Council.

His resignation was accepted October 26, 2002 by John Paul II.
