Commerce is a city in Hunt County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the northeast of the county as well as in northeastern Texas, about 50 miles from Oklahoma to the north away and has a total area of 16.9 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

History

The beginning of the settlement, then called Cow Hill because of the large herds of cattle between the Middle Sulphur River and the South Sulphur River, is attributed to JH "Si" Jackson, who built a store or trading post here in 1864. In 1870 there were a few more houses and a post office and in 1872 the first public school was established.

1885 was the place now awarded with 145 inhabitants, a town. 1887 got the city by the St. Louis Southwestern Railroad direct connection to Texarkana, Sherman and Fort Worth.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 7,669 people in 2,881 households and 1,524 families. The population density was 456.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 71.07 % White, 20.78 % African American, 0.42 % Native American, 2.59 % Asian, 0.21 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 3.13 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.80% were Mixed Race and 7.65 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,881 households, 28.4 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 35.0 % were married couples living together. 14.0% were single mothers and 47.1 % were non-families. 36.1 % of all households were single-person households, and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size amounted to 3.02.

21.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 28.2 % from 18 to 24, 26.3% 25-44, 14.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.8 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 25 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 94.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 24,065, and the median income for a family $ 37,284. Males had a median income of $ 26,389 versus $ 19,565 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,444. 22.9 % of the population and 13.8 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 24.4 % have children under the age of 18 and 14.8 % of those 65 or older.
