The song is often performed in conjunction with farewell events and is also - performed by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman - Time to Say Goodbye as (English for " time to say goodbye " ) become known.

Background

The piece was first performed by Andrea Bocelli at the San Remo Festival in 1995 and appeared on his album Bocelli from the same year. Published in 1999, Donna Summer in the USA, a dance remix, with whom she scored a hit in the American dance charts and was also represented on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song had worldwide success with the second release of 1996, which partially published in English by Andrea Bocelli with soprano Sarah Brightman, was sung as Time to Say Goodbye. The title was awarded in Europe over 15 times platinum. Among other things, Paul Potts sang the song at the farewell game of Oliver Kahn between FC Bayern Munich and the German national football team on September 2, 2008.

Since then, numerous other published versions of other artists, the most important of these was Por ti volare, a Spanish version with hardly modified text.

Development

The release of the song in its original form by Polydor Italy was commercially very successful. Polydor and EastWest it marketed in 1996 however, as the theme song of the final battle of boxer Henry Maske against Virgil Hill. It had been observed that Vangelis ' Conquest of Paradise was funded by Maske's fights. The song was rewritten in a duet with Sarah Brightman, the A Question of Honour had interpreted for a previous of Maske's fights. The German producer Frank Peterson, who works with Brightman since 1991, opted for the song instead of the German With you I will leave to give an English title.

The struggle between the mask and Hill took place on 23 November 1996, he had 21 million viewers. Bocelli and Brightman sang their duet at the opening and at the end of the fight. By December of 1996, the single reached the top of the German singles chart, with sales of about 40,000 to 60,000 pieces per day and forecasts for at least a million by year end. The albums of both singers learned as an increase in sales. By February of the following year 1997, the single broke the sales record in Germany. With over 2.75 million copies sold and eleven gold records ( 5x platinum) it was surpassed only by Candle in the Wind.

In France, the single was six weeks at No. 1 and has won three times platinum. In Belgium she was twelve weeks at # 1 and became the best-selling single of all time. She received six platinum awards in Belgium, four in the Netherlands and double platinum in Italy.

The duet was included on Sarah Brightman's album Timeless in 1997, which was renamed in the U.S. in Time to Say Goodbye, the song moved to the beginning of the album. Brightman has also recorded a solo version, which was published both on the duet single as well as on later albums.

Musical Style

As with many pieces Bocelli also dominate strings and the overall very quiet, sentimental mood. As the song of a farewell feeling is, the vocals for Bocelli ratios is rather quiet, rarely his voice really goes up. In the duet with Sarah Brightman to his Italian singing alternates with the partly English Brightman's singing.
