Congo Railway

The Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo ( National Railway Company of the Congo, abbreviated SNCC ) is a state-owned enterprise of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the maintenance of railroads, ports, marine and bus routes in the country.

The SNCC operates among others, the river ports Ilebo, Kiangani, Kindu and Ubunu and port Kalemie on Lake Tanganyika.

Route network

The network of SNCC includes theoretical 5033 km with different gauges, all of which date from the colonial era and are no longer passable mostly in a dilapidated condition or in part.

West

A 366 km long route leads from Kinshasa to the Atlantic port of Matadi. There barges can be loaded, what the connection between this main port for ocean-going vessels and inland navigable on Congo guaranteed. This route but is operated by the state also Onatra on behalf of SNCC. Together with the dismantled in the 1980s, 136 km long Mayumbe -Bahn ( track width 615 mm ) they formed the West Region.

East

South and central parts of the country

In the southeast of the country, the route network comprises 3516 km. This network connects the resource-rich Katanga region directly with the railways of Zambia (Zambia Railways ) at Kasumbalesa, Angola ( Benguela ) at Dilolo, and indirectly with those of South Africa ( Spoornet ), Namibia (Trans Namib ), Zimbabwe ( National Railways of Zimbabwe), Malawi (see also: rail transport in Malawi), Mozambique ( Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique ), and with the TAZARA. Operationally, this network is divided into the East region ( see above); Center in Kanaga, 978 km Kapspurstrecken and South in Likasi, which comprises 1377 km Kapsurstrecken. In the South 858 km single phase AC 50 Hz 25 000 V are electrified. The division into these regions is mainly due to the predecessor companies.

North

In the north, in the province of Orientale leads the main line of 1026 km long Vicicongo routes from Congo in the direction of the gold mines of Kilo -Moto, but already ends in Mungbere. Transport

The SNCC was launched on 2 December 1974, Law No 74/ 027. Their tasks were modified by the decrees No. 0050 of 7 November 1995 and 070 /2002 of 24/06/2002 and completed.
