History

In 1968, Dr. Angelo Ravano Contship SA in Switzerland. The first trip of the Company was made by the Sea Maid of Fos to Casablanca in October 1969.

In 1970 an agency was opened in Milan and included the terminal operation in La Spezia. In the first year about 8000 ISO container units (TEU ) were handled. In the following years, the seed grew rapidly and a European network with subsidiaries in Spain and the Netherlands was built in the years 1973 and 1974. The relocation of the agency in Milan to Genoa in 1974 was accompanied by the extension of the service offer to the eastern Mediterranean ports. 1976 Ellerman City Liners was appointed Contship agency in Portugal.

1977 two important steps with the formation of a subsidiary in the United Kingdom and the recording of the first direct container service between Europe and India have been made. This move reflected the ambition to become a significant player on major routes. The dice for a pioneering effort in the container shipping had fallen, as Contship first shipping line container in Bombay (now Mumbai) capsized. More experience in working partnerships they won in 1979 by the founding of the Gulf Contship Line as a common service with Ellerman City Liners - a new service that connected Europe with the Middle East.

In the second decade, the development of society accelerated. By shifting its headquarters from Switzerland to Felixstowe and Ipswich Contship became an integral part of Britain's shipping companies. In the early 1980s Contship stretched out and expanded his interests. In Spain it won the Agency for Trans Freight Lines. In the UK, it participated in the construction of Arrow Freight, a freight forwarding company. In the meantime, a parent company was founded in Curacao. All these were steps to improve the international presence and reputation of the company.

The Eagle Container Line, which connected Northern Europe and the Mediterranean to Australia, began in 1982 as a non- conference service and gave the customer offering a competitively priced and reliable service as well. In terms of becoming a global organization was particularly meaningful, as here, the Ocean Star Container Line, a westwärtiger round- the-world service was added in 1986. The following year the Medipas service that operated between the Mediterranean and India / Pakistan was included. 1987 Contship Container Lines brand was founded. They gradually took over the management control over Contships - container shipping services, agency and intermodal activities. At the end of the second decade of the Ocean Star service has been extended to a Far East - Australia connection and to northern European ports. With the acquisition of Costa Container Line and they began a Med-US-Ost/Golf-Küsten-Dienst.

In the 1990s, the pace quickened even more with new ships for the Eagle service, a revision of the Costa - operation and recording of container terminal operations in Salerno. 1991 was the year with fundamental changes for the Indian subcontinent service by connecting CMB transport by means of an agreement to develop a joint service. Such agreements have always played an important role in the Contship activities. In 1993, just as an agreement with P & O, a restructuring of the Eagle service and an improvement of the Ocean -Star service by the addition of larger tonnage with it. More tonnage improvements in Contship - Euroasia service were made and the Gulf - line was changed to Contship - Levant Line in association with four partners in 1994. With the inclusion of the container terminal operation in Savona and Gioia Tauro in 1995, with the restructuring of Euroasia / Mediterranean -Asia service and taking a Mittelmeer-US-Golf/Mexiko-Dienstes the service offering has been further improved.

In 1996, the Levant service was modified and the Mittelmeer-US/Mexiko-Dienst been improved. A new era began in 1997, when Contship Container Lines was acquired by CP Ships, which Contship one of the few nautical lines, which took over CP at a profitable level. The Ocean Star service has been provided with new tonnage and Contship entered into partnership with the CMA - CGM Group and Marfret in the year 1998. 1999 was a year of folding of existing activities and the construction of a platform for further growth. There have been significant cost savings and improved profitability and opened up new, additional shipping areas including the U.S. west coast to the Mediterranean. In the same year Contship launched its website and painted when the first container shipping company, its web address on the hull of his ship as a mobile advertising.

2001, a new service between China and Europe was recorded in partnership with CMA CGM, but had this service in early March to be withdrawn due to lack of profitability in 2003, caused by an import / export imbalance, low freight rates and high fixed costs slot.

The Austral - Asia service has with the new 4112 -TEU container ships cooling Contship Aurora, Contship Australis and Borealis Contship (identical to Santa R-Class ) extended the end of 2002 with a high number of reefer container terminals. A new Contship logo was designed in 2004 as a result of a change in brand strategy, but it never achieved the recognition value of the old. In January 2006 Contship Container Lines has been replaced as the final mark by the CP Ships brand since CP only wanted to perform with a brand. This was the project "one brand - one team" advertised. End of 2005, CP Ships was acquired by TUI AG and mid-2006, integrated into the Hapag- Lloyd organization.
