  • Games of the Copa Libertadores in 2004

The Estadio Corona is a former football stadium in the city of Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico. It served the Serie A club Santos Laguna between July 1970 and November 2009 as a fixed home ground and was a regular venue for playing the Mexican Primera División since the 1988/89 season. New home ground of Club Santos Laguna is since 11 November 2009, the Nuevo Estadio Corona.

History

The stadium was inaugurated on July 2, 1970, a friendly match between the local CF Torreón and Mexico 's most popular club Chivas Guadalajara. The last game was a point of La Liga match, which was held on 1 November 2009 between Santos Laguna and the UNAM Pumas. The last goal at the Estadio Corona scored Vicente Vuoso, the equalized for the hosts in the 66th minute for a 1-1 draw. The very next day began the demolition of the former smallest Erstligastadions of Mexico.

The users of the stadium

In the first four years of its existence ( seasons 1970/71 bis 1973/74 ), the stadium served the term of his first league CF Torreón as home ground until it sold its Erstligalizenz. Then here was the CF Laguna from its home games before even this association in 1978 sold its license and the stadium remained largely unused for the next few years. It was only after the founding of Club Santos Laguna and its accession to the then third-rate Segunda División 'B' for the 1983/84 season had the stadium again have a fixed user who since then plays its home games here.

The name of the stadium

In its early days, the stadium was named Estadio Moctezuma, before it was officially renamed in 1986 in Estadio Corona. The new name was chosen based on the eponymous beer brand of Grupo Modelo, a brewery in Torreón operates since 1967 in which the Corona brand is brewed. Unofficially carries the stadium and the name El coloso de las Carolinas ( the Colossus of Carolina ) after the eponymous district in which it is located.

Final Games

In Estadio Corona a meeting of the five runners-up Santos Laguna has ever held to the Mexican soccer championship. Interestingly, Santos could always win the championship when the second leg at the Estadio Corona was discharged and always went out empty when this was taking place the first leg.
