County Antrim

Antrim ( Irish: Aontroim ) is one of six historic counties ( counties ) in Northern Ireland.

Geography

The county lies between Lough Neagh, the River Bann and the coast of the Irish Sea, the North Channel. The largest part of the county take the Antrim Mountains a in the northwest. The eastern half of the big lake Lough Neagh is part of the county.

History

The north of the county belonged since the 5th century of the Christian Kingdom of Dalriada. By the Normans, the Irish part was separated from the Scottish part of the beginning of the 9th century and formed the present-day County Down the Kingdom Ulidia (or Ulaidh ). After the conquest by the Normans in the 12th century this was a county on Ulster. The English supremacy weakened over time more and more, until it was replaced by Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century. The county was formed and distributed the land to English landowners.

Economy

The economy focuses on the catchment area of Belfast, which reaches up to Antrim. The rest of the country is heavily dominated by agriculture with sheep and cattle. Economically important is the place Bushmills, where a is the oldest and most famous whiskey distilleries in the country established with Old Bushmills. There are numerous, some quality whiskeys are produced.
