Courcelles- lès -Montbéliard is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Courcelles- lès -Montbéliard is located on 316 m, about 2 km southwest of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the western part of the basin of Montbéliard in the valley of the Allan opposite of Sainte -Suzanne.

The area of ​​2.40 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the basin of Montbéliard. The main settlement area is located in the Allan Valley. The river, which here describes an arc and changes its flow direction from west to south, forms the western boundary. It flows through an approximately one kilometer- wide flat Talniederung and is accompanied by the waterways of the Rhine- Rhone Canal. To the southeast, the municipality's area extends over the plateau-like, wooded hill of Chênois in the adjacent 1.5 km wide valley of the Doubs River, along which runs the southern border. With 347 m is reached the highest elevation of Courcelles- lès -Montbéliard in the forest of Chênois.

Neighboring communities of Courcelles- lès -Montbéliard are Sainte -Suzanne in the north, Montbéliard and Arbouans in the east, Voujeaucourt in the south and beard in the West.

History

Is first mentioned Courcelles in the 12th century. Since the Middle Ages the village belonged to the territory of the Counts of Montbéliard. Already in 1571 founded Eugène Episcopius the first paper mill on the Allan, which was later continued by Jacques Foillet. With the annexation of the county of Montbeliard Courcelles came in 1793 final in French hands. With the establishment of a cotton mill in 1860, the actual industrialization of Courcelles began. The factory employed up to 250 people, had their operation but set in 1965. Today Courcelles- lès -Montbéliard part of the community association Communauté d' Agglomà du Pays de Montbéliard.

Across the Rhine - Rhone canal leads a drawbridge built in 1914. A stele recalls Étienne Oehmichen in 1921 completed his first successful flight with a helicopter here.

Population

With 1105 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Courcelles- lès -Montbéliard is one of the smaller communities of the department of Doubs. In the period 1926 to 1975 the population rose sharply to ( tripling of the population ). This was followed by a slight decrease of about 7 %. Since then, the population remained at a constant level. Today, the settlement area of Courcelles- lès -Montbéliard has grown together almost seamlessly with those of Montbéliard and Sainte -Suzanne.

By the mid -19th century, Courcelles- lès -Montbéliard became an industrially defined community. Today there are in the village of various operations of small and medium industries and many shops of retail for your everyday needs.
