Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland

Cromartie Sutherland - Leveson - Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland, KG ( born July 20, 1851 in London, † June 27, 1913 in Dunrobin Castle) until 1858, when Lord Cromartie Sutherland - Leveson - Gower, Earl Gower from 1858 to 1861 as 1861-1892 and known as the Marquess of Stafford, was a British peer and therefore a member of the House of Lords.

Background

Sutherland was the eldest son of George Sutherland - Leveson - Gower, 3rd Duke of Sutherland. He went to Eton College.

Military career

As Marquess of Stafford, Sutherland entered his military service as an ensign in the 2nd Life Guards, and in 1875 added as a lieutenant to retire. He was Captain in the Staffordshire Yeomanry in 1876 and was there from 1891 to 1898 Lieutenant - Colonel. He was Lieutenant - Colonel of 1882-1891 also Sutherland Rifles, a volunteer regiment. From 1911 until his death he was Honorary Colonel of the Territorial Force Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders.

He was also the President of the Staffordshire Territorial Forces Association since the founding of the Territorial Force in 1908.

Political career

Sutherland's political activities were focused on the House of Lords, where he served on the benches of the Conservative Party, after he had inherited the title from his father. He was also Mayor of 1895-96 Longton Stoke -on-Trent in Staffordshire, and was there from 1898 Alderman.

Awards

He was winner of the 1902 Order of the Garter.

Sports

He was Master of Foxhounds temporarily in the North Staffordshire Hunt.

Family

He married on October 20, 1884 Millicent Sutherland - Leveson - Gower, Duchess of Sutherland, a daughter of Robert St Clair- Erskine, 4th Earl of Rosslyn and had with her 4 children:

  • Lady Victoria Elizabeth Sutherland - Leveson - Gower ( 1885-1888 ).
  • George Granville Sutherland - Leveson - Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland ( 1888-1963 )
  • Lord Alastair St. Clair Leveson - Gower Sutherland (1890-1921) ∞ Elizabeth Demarest. Daughter was Elizabeth Sutherland - Leveson - Gower, 24th Countess of Sutherland.
  • Lady Rosemary Millicent Sutherland - Leveson - Gower (1893-1930) ∞ William Ward, 3rd Earl of Dudley.

In 1900 the Duke of Sutherland had approximately 550,000 hectares ( 1,358,000 acres) of land and driven by a steam engine Yacht Catania, which he also chartered to super rich contemporaries.

The Duke died on 27 June 1913 at the age of 61 years in Dunrobin Castle, Sutherlandshire and was buried in Dunrobin.
