Cromary

Cromary is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Cromary situated at an altitude of 236 m above sea level, 7 km south of Rioz and about 15 km north of the city of Besançon (air line). The village extends to the south of the department on the edge of the wide valley of Ognon, north of the ridge of the Fort de la Dame Blanche ( Grande Cote ).

The area of ​​5.36 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Ognon Valley. The southern and eastern border is always along the Ognon. This flows here with several meanders through an alluvial plain, which has a width of one to two kilometers and is on average 220 ​​m. He is dammed east of Cromary to an elongated lake. From the river, the municipality's area extends north across the valley to the adjacent plateau, partly forested, is passed partly under arable and meadow land. It consists of an alternation of calcareous and sandy- marly layers of the upper Jurassic period. In the northeast, the area extends into the wooded valley section of the Ruisseau de Malgérard, a right tributary of the Ognon. With 282 m is reached the highest elevation of Cromary in the Bois de la Chenove.

History

The noble family of Cromary is first mentioned in the year 1131st In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. Cromary became the center of an important Kastlanei. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Cromary is a member of the 28 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais.

Attractions

Population

With 164 inhabitants ( 1999) Cromary is one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1896 253 persons were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and infrastructure

Cromary was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. Today there are various businesses of the local small business sector.
