Crooked Island, Bahamas

Crooked Iceland is an island and a district of the Bahamas.

It is an island of an archipelago that lies in a shallow lagoon called the Bight of Acklins, Crooked Island the largest of Iceland in the north and Acklins in the south east is. The smaller are Long Cay (formerly Fortune Iceland ) in the northwest, and Castle in the south of Iceland.

The islands were settled by American Loyalists during the American Revolution in the late 1780s, who built here cotton plantations with more than 1,000 employed slaves. After the prohibition of slavery in the British Empire, the plantations were uneconomical, and the substitute, diving after sponges, is now also no longer economical. The residents live in the meantime from fishing and small farms.

The capital is Colonel Hill on Crooked Iceland. Albert Town, located on Long Cay and sparsely populated, was once a thriving little town. They also lived on the sponge trade and salt industries, and was also a transport port for dock workers who were on the passing ships to work.
