Cruseilles

Cruseilles is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is the capital of the canton of Cruseilles in the Arrondissement of Saint- Julien -en- Genevois.

Geography

Cruseilles is located on 783 m above sea level. M., about 15 km north of the town of Annecy (air line). The village stretches a scenic location on a ridge at the southern edge of the Salève, approximately 300 m above the valley of Les Usses, in Genevois.

The area of ​​25.41 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Genevois. The southern boundary runs along the Usses, a left tributary of the Rhône, which flows here in a deep valley. South of Cruseilles breaks through the Usses in a ravine, which is spanned by the Ponts de la Caille, the valley narrows between the Salève and Mont Pelé. History

Cruseilles is first mentioned in the early 12th century under the name Crusilla. By the end of the 18th century the spelling Crusillie was common. About the origin of the place name, the sources are not unanimous. A possible interpretation is the derivation from the personal name Cursillius, on the other hand, the word could also be attributed to Croisille ( crossroads ).

In the Middle Ages Cruseilles formed its own government, which was under the Counts of Geneva. In 1282 the town got some freedom rights. In the 16th century Cruseilles came to the Dukes of Savoy and henceforth shared the fate of Savoy.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Maurice was built in 1848 and remodeled in 1866. In the field of Cruseilles several castles and manor houses, including the Château de Beccon, the Château des Avenières ( 20th century) on the southern slope of the Salève, the Maison de Fésigny (originally from the 14th century ) and the Maison de Pontverre ( 17th century). The Gorge of Les Usses is by an impressive suspension bridge - the Pont de la Caille - spans, which was completed in 1839. Next to it is the newer road bridge in 1928, the Pont Caquot.

Population

With 3978 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Cruseilles belongs to the medium-sized towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the early 1970s, a substantial population increase was recorded thanks to the attractive residential area. Outside the old town center numerous single-family homes were built.

Economy and infrastructure

Cruseilles has long been an embossed by agriculture and the retail community. Today there are various companies of small and medium enterprises. Many working population commuters going about their work mainly in the area Annecy and Geneva - Annemasse.

The village has a good infrastructure. It lies on the main road N201 that runs from Saint -Julien -en- Genevois over the Col du Mont Sion to Annecy. In the foreseeable future, the center should be relieved by the highway from Annecy to Saint -Julien -en- Genevois, was first built in 2006. Further road links exist with La Roche- sur -Foron and Sallenôves; further Cruseilles is the southern starting point of the tourist route on the Mont Salève.
