Cuneyt Cakir [ dʒy.nɛjt tʃɑ.kɯɾ ] ( born November 23, 1976 in Istanbul) is a Turkish football referee.

Career

Cuneyt Cakir began his Süper Lig career on 29 September 2001 with the league match against Malatyaspor Çaykur Rizespor.

Since 2006 he is on the FIFA list of referees football. Due to his good performances he was invited to the UEFA Referees Seminar 2007 and up classified in the Premier Development. On 29 September 2010 he initiated in the Champions League group stage match against Rubin Kazan FC Barcelona. He also led more UEFA Champions League group stage games.

Cakir was promoted in June 2011 in the elite group of the UEFA Referees and must therefore conduct games of the UEFA Champions League knockout round.

He participated in the 2012 European Football Championship as one of the twelve referees. In addition, Cakir initiated in 2012 the final of the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

Early 2013, he finished second in the election for World Referee of the Year in 2012.

FIFA has appointed him for the football World Cup in 2014 as a referee.
