In these years have included Wally Schreiber and Rick Nasheim among his teammates. However, the scouts thought he was too small and so was the star of the junior league, whose number 16 will not be awarded at the Regina Pats, selected the NHL Entry Draft in 1983 by the Edmonton Oilers only in the seventh round as 140.

The jump to the NHL never managed Derkatch. In 1984 he moved to Italy and played there at the HC Bolzano and Asiago. In 1986 he moved to Finland, where he played for Ilves Tampere. For the Bundesliga season 1989/90 he moved to the newly promoted EC Hedos Munich into the Hockey League. As Ausländerduo with Ken Berry, he played in the heart of Munich's fans. Within a year he left Munich to one of the rival, the SB Rosenheim. There he was in the 1991/92 season top scorer in the league. With Gordon Sherven he moved to Switzerland, the Zurich SC. His move back to Germany to Dusseldorf EC in the course of the season brought him in the season 1992/93 for his first German championship title. With his move back to the EC Hedos Munich, he was able to keep the championship. In the coming year he was well on his way to defend his title, but the team, which is now called Mad Dogs Munich, presented for financial reasons, the operation of gambling one. This was followed by one year at the Kaufbeurer eagles in the DEL and two seasons at SC Riessersee in the first league, before he ended his active career.

Later he worked among other things as Scout of the Washington Capitals.
