Damvillers

Damvillers is a commune with 673 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Meuse in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Verdun and is capital of the canton Damvillers.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the Damvillers Thinte, a tributary of the Loison, about 25 kilometers north of Verdun.

Medical History note

During the siege of Damvillers in 1552 Ambroise Paré ( 1510-1590 ) began the first time an artery ligation in front of an amputation. His new method was soon to replace the previously used cauterization. Damvillers belonged to the Duchy of Luxembourg.
