Ancemont

Ancemont is a commune with 605 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Meuse in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the canton Souilly and is the seat of the municipal association Meuse - Sacred Way.

Geography

Ancemont is located on the left bank of the Meuse, at the output of Billonneau - basin to an average height of 265 meters above sea level, 10 kilometers southeast of Verdun, the capital of the arrondissement. The village is surrounded by the neighboring communities Dugny -sur -Meuse, Les Monthairons and Dieue -sur -Meuse. The municipality has an area of 13.3 square kilometers.

History

In the Middle Ages was called the town of Mont and was under the duchy of Bar and the PREVOTE of Souilly. In the 17th century the village Ance was destroyed by Swedish troops and the inhabitants moved to Montreal, which was then called Ancemont. In the ancien régime, there were three fiefs in the locality.

1793 Ancemont received the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government in the wake of the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ).

Culture and sights

The church of La Decollation de Saint Jean Baptiste ( dt: the beheading of John the Baptist ) was built in 1855 in neo-gothic style on the foundations of a church dating back to 1686. In the church there was a statue of St.. Mary Magdalene from the 15th century sold by the parish priest of Ancemont 1906. She was purchased in 1922 from the Louvre and is now in Room 13 of the Richelieuflügels.

The castle La Bessière dates from the 18th century. The rectangular main house is flanked by two square towers. over the front door is a relief with the coat of arms of La Bessière family. The castle is privately owned and used as a hostel with two guest rooms.

Economy

Major lines of business in Ancemont are forestry and wood technology. 1860 a sawmill was built. In the 1990s created two furniture stores, Anthéa and Sarap.
