Laneuville-sur-Meuse

Laneuville -sur -Meuse is a commune with 449 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Meuse in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Verdun, the Canton Stenay and the Local Government Association, Pays de Stenay.

Geography

Laneuville -sur -Meuse is located at an altitude of 168 m above sea level, 38 kilometers southeast of Sedan and 48 kilometers northwest of Verdun in the extreme northwest of Lorraine.

The village is located on the eastern edge of here about two kilometers wide Talniederung the Meuse, on both sides of the village Bach Ruisseau de la lieuse. The eastern boundary of the municipality is formed in part by the Wiseppe, a small river that flows at the level Laneuville into the Meuse. In this respect, the municipality does not reach the Meuse, although the community name of the additive -sur -Meuse used ( on the Meuse ). The strip between Laneuville and the left bank of the Meuse with the former railway station and a paper mill belongs to the small town Stenay whose core is located on the right side of the Meuse.

The 22.82 km ² large municipality is bordered to the west by the Ardennes department and covers large parts of the Forêt de Dieulet, which leads on from the Meuse valley in the landscape of the Argonne. In addition to the Forêt de Dieulet includes the forest areas Bois de Laneuville and parts of the Bois de la Haie in the south as well as shares in the Forêt de Jaulnay in the north to the community, so there is a forest share of almost 80 % (1800 ha) of the total area of the municipality.

Neighboring communities of Laneuville -sur -Meuse are Luzy -Saint -Martin and Cesse in the north, Stenay in the east, Wiseppe in the south, Beauclair in the southwest, Beaufort -en- Argonne and Belval- Bois- les -Dames in the west and Beaumont -en- Argonne, Létanne and Pouilly -sur -Meuse in north- west.

History

Laneuville was created in 1244 as a suburb of Stenay ( la Ville neuve devant Stenay / the new town towards Stenay ). The forest wealth of the community resulted in the story often to disputes over the use by the residents, who were settled in the 19th century.

Already in the 18th century was a brewery and a malting plant in Laneuville. Brewing beer was discontinued around 1850. The brewery dates back to 1830 is now the mayor's house ( Mairie ). Until the First World War there was a soap factory in Laneuville. The industrial operations moved in the 20th century in the neighboring town of Stenay.

Despite the destruction of the First and Second World War ( a 1966 monument raised in the form of a bayonet is reminiscent of the fighting in May and June 1940) are still a few buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries preserved, including the church of Saint -Nicolas.
