Daniel Petrov

Daniel Bozhilow Petrov (Bulgarian: Даниел Божилов Петров ) ( born September 8, 1971 in Varna ) is a former Bulgarian boxer. Petrov was European champion in 1993 and 1996, World Champion 1995, silver medalist at the 1992 Olympic Games and Olympic champion in 1996.

Career

In the youth level ( U19) Petrov was 1989 world champion in the light flyweight (-48 kg). In the final he beat the Germans Rico Kubat.

His international championship won Petrov 1990 Balkan Championships in Patras. The following year he reached flyweight (-51 kg) the semi-finals of the European Championships in Gothenburg and failed in this István Kovács, Hungary ( 31:16 ). As a result, Petrov moved back into the light flyweight and won at the world championships in the same year the bronze medal. The semi-finals he lost to the Cuban representative Rogelio Marcelo with 29:19 points. 1992 follow Petrov's first participation in the Olympic Games. After victories over the bronze medalist of the 1991 World Championships Nelson Dieppa, Puerto Rico ( 10:7 ), O Song Chol, North Korea (RSC 3 ), the bronze medalist at the European Championships in 1991 Pal Lakatos, Hungary ( 17:8 ), and Jan Quast, Germany ( 15:9 ), he reached the final. In this he again faced the Cuban Marcelo, where he was beaten with 20:10 points.

1993 won Petrov after a final victory over Pal Lakatos first time the European Championships. In the same year he reached again the final of the World Championships. He lost however to Nschan Muntschjan, Armenia ( 8:6 ). At the World Championships in Berlin in 1995 Petrov won the gold medal. In the final he beat the Frenchman Bernard nom. After he was in 1996 for the second time became European champion, he competed at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. After victories over Nshan Munchyan, Armenia ( 11:5 ), Somrot Kamsing, Thailand ( 14:6 ), and Oleh Kyrjuchin, Ukraine ( 17:8 ), he reached the final. In this Mansueto Velasco him the Philippine faced what he suggested with 19:6 points and thus won the gold medal.

At the 1997 World Championships Petrov won after a semi-final defeat against Maikro Romero, Cuba ( 5:3 ), the bronze medal. At the European Championships the following year, however, he dropped out in the first fight against Oleh Kyrjuchin ( 6:6 ). Petrov's last tournament was the 1999 World Championships in Houston. He failed in the second round in the late bronze medalist Suban Pannon, Thailand ( 8:3 ).
