David Moorcroft

David Moorcroft (David Robert " Dave" Moorcroft, born April 10, 1953 in Coventry) is a former British middle and long distance runner in the late 1970s and was one of the world leaders in the early 1980s.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, he was seventh over 1500 m. In 1978, he won over the same distance first at the European Athletics Championships in Prague and then won bronze for England starting at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.

At the Olympic Games in 1980, he started about 5000 m, but retired with stomach problems in the semifinals. In 1982, he won over the same distance at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and improved at the Bislett Games the year- old world record of the Kenyan Henry Rono of almost six seconds 13:00,41 min. This record he held for three years. Favorites, he traveled to the European Athletics Championships in Athens, but had there the two Germans Thomas Wessinghage and Werner Schildhauer beaten.

At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, he took over 5000 m on the 14th Place.

During his playing days was David Moorcroft student of sports science at Loughborough University. He is currently Managing Director of the UK Athletics UK Athletics Association. In 1998, he was honored for his contributions to the Athletics with the Order of the British Empire.
