Delhaize Group

The Delhaize Group ( Groupe Delhaize French ), listed in the BEL20, is an international food chain from Belgium, who is active in seven countries. The company's headquarters is located in Molenbeek ( near Brussels ).

History and Operations

The group was founded in 1867 by Jules Delhaize and his brothers in Ransart near Charleroi in Belgium. The focus of their economic activity is in the operation of food supermarkets in North America (United States), Europe ( Belgium, Greece, Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia and Luxembourg ) and Southeast Asia (Indonesia). The Group is listed on the international exchange Euro Next, index BEL20.

The end of 2007, the Group had a sales network of 2,545 stores and employed approximately 138,000 people. The predominant form of business there is the supermarket, whose share is 85 % of the sales network of Delhaize Group. The remaining 15 % are made up of smaller and more specialized stores. About the sale of food out, which accounts for about 95 % of the revenues of Delhaize Group, the group also acts as a wholesaler of food products for some of their business and for other products, such as products for pets and domestic animals and beauty and care products. The group includes, among others, in the USA, Food Lion and Hannaford. Although founded by the brothers, the retailer Cora is not part of the Delhaize Group.

In Germany, in the period 2003 to 2009, four Delhaize markets. There are two markets each were in Aachen (since 2003) and in Cologne; 2006 opened a branch in Köln-Mitte and was opened in Cologne - Brown Field on October 18, 2007 to date, last branch. January 19, 2009 Delhaize announced to request that the stores to be sold in Aachen and Cologne. First, it was still, they were looking for a successor solution in which the fundamental concept and particularly the delicatessen department should continue; but then presented to 26 August 2009, all four houses ceased operation and have been adopted by the REWE Group.

In 2005, Delhaize Group posted sales of 18.6 billion euros and generated a profit of 364.9 million euros.
