Devínska Nová Ves

Devínska Nová Ves ( German Thebes -Neudorf, Hungarian Dévényújfalu, Croatian [ Devinske ] Novo Selo ) is a district in the north west of Bratislava ( Pressburg ) at the March directly on the border with Austria and north of the Theban Kogel (Slovak Devinska Kobyla ) located.

Description and History

The place is an important paleoanthropological archaeological site. Sun, 7 skeletons of primates arrived in what is now Bratislava in 1957 in this district ( Epi ) Pliopithecus vindobonensis to light. These have been dated to 25-15 million years ago. More recently ( 14-10 million years ago) are the findings of a tooth Griphopithecus suessi ( formerly known as Dryopithecus darwini or Sivapithecus darwini ), which had been discovered in the same area as early as 1902. An important archaeological site for fossils is the Sandberg on the western slope of the Devinska Kobyla.

Working tools of the Neanderthals from the Paleolithic were discovered here, also there was proven settlements in the Neolithic, Eneolithic, to the Bronze Age, Hallstatt period, La Tène period, the Roman period, an area surrounded by several villages / hill forts Great Moravian Wallburg and early Slovak settlements. In addition, burial of the Late Bronze Age, Migration Period, a huge Slavic- Avar Avar and tomb of the 7th century were ( it is, inter alia, for the description of the conditions at the beginning of the empire of Samo important) and discovered a Great Moravian burial.

The place was first called simply Neudorf ( with equivalents in Slovak and Hungarian ) and was (according to other sources until 1553) mentioned in this form in 1451 for the first time. He was tributary to the castle Thebes.

In the 30 years of the 16th century, settled here from the Turks refuge -seeking Croats and have long been the main population of the village. Since the 16th century it was called Croatian -Neudorf ( with equivalents in Slovak and Hungarian ). Although the official name was already in the 18th century Nowa Wass / Deven Uj - Falu / Theeben -Neudorf, the share of Croatian -born population remained high. They were mainly engaged in agriculture. 1910, in the village of 2,817 inhabitants, of whom 1,164 Croatian, 917 Slovak, Hungarian and disclosures 365 201 German as their mother tongue or most used language.

Since 1 January 1972 the then independent municipality belongs to the district of Bratislava ( Pressburg ). Today it is the for the Slovak economy extremely important Volkswagen factory.

Traffic

In the local train station opens the coming of Marchegg in Austria train connection from Vienna ( Marchegger Eastern Railway with a bridge over the Morava ) to Bratislava in the coming from the north main route from Prague to Bratislava ( railway Devínska Nová Ves - Skalica na Slovensku ).
