Domenico Fiasella

Domenico Fiasella, called " Il Sarzana " (* August 12, 1589 in Sarzana, † October 14, 1669 in Genoa ) was an Italian Baroque painter, and a leading representative of the Genoese School, 17th century.

Fiasella was the son of silversmith Giovanni Fiasella, who worked for the cathedral in Sarzana. In Genoa, Domenico began on the recommendation of the Bishop of Sarzana with 11 years of a perennial artistic training at Aurelio Lomi, which continued in the workshop of Giovanni Battista Paggi.

1607 to 1616 he was in Rome, where he attended the Accademia del Nudo. There he collaborated with Domenico Passignano and Giuseppe Cesari ( " Cavalier d' Arpino "). In addition to studying located in Rome paintings by Andrea del Sarto, Raphael, Michelangelo and others, to Sarzana was particularly interested in the chiaroscuro of Caravaggio that he was brought home on the occasional collaboration with Orazio Gentileschi. About the placement of Gentileschi he became friends with the Genoese art collector Vincenzo Giustiniani, who was at that time one of his most important patrons. 1617 he returned to Sarzana back by a year later to go to Genoa, where he coined the local art sustainable.

One of his most important jobs of the first Genoese years were frescoes around the story of Esther and Ahasuerus for the Palazzo Lamellini alla Zecca, where formerly the famous painter Sofonisba Anguissola and nobles lived. After the death of Giovanni Battista Paggi public contracts grew on again so that he could paint or finish many of his paintings to his pupils and he even appeal to the court of the Duke of Mantua had to turn down in 1635 due to the flood of orders. His mimicry and ability to adapt to the artistic trends of his time, such as those of Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, but also that of the Bolognese school of painting of Annibale Carracci and Guercino prevented the emergence forming an independent and personal style, and resulted partially in a mixture of Malrichtung its role models.

His many students include Angelica Veronica Airola, Bernardo Bernardi, Valerio Castelli, Francesco Capurro, Giovanni Battista casone, David Corte, Gregorio De Ferrari, Francesco Gentileschi, Antonio Invrea, Francesco Merano, Giovanni Paolo Oderico, Andrea Podesta, Giuseppe Porta, Luca Saltarella Giovanni Stefano Verdura, Lazzaro Villanova, Giovanni Vincenzo Zerbi and his nephew Giovanni Battista Fiasella, the 1669 inherited the estate of his deceased uncle.
