Don McKenzie (swimmer)

Donald Ward "Don" McKenzie ( born May 11, 1947 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, † December 3, 2008 in Reno, Nevada ) was an American swimmer.

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, he was surprisingly Olympic champion in the 100 m breaststroke. He was the first Olympic champion over this distance. Previously, medals were only awarded on the 200 m breaststroke route. He also won the gold medal in the 4 x 100 m medley relay of Americans in these games. He also won an NCAA title over 100 yard breast, while he coached in the late 1960s at Indiana University under coach James Counsilman.

In 1989, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the swimming sport.
