Duodrama

A Duodrama (also Duodram or two- character play ) is a play for two actors or singers in which the spoken voice is used together with an accompanying voice for increased dramatic effect. The Duodrama was especially popular in the late 18th and the early 19th century.

The most famous work in the field of opera are Ariadne auf Naxos (1775 ) and Medea by Georg Benda. Mozart admired Benda's works and similar techniques used in Zaide (1780 ) and Thamos, King of Egypt ( c. 1773-1780 ). He considered himself to write a Duodrama named Semiramis. Beethoven's Fidelio (1805-1814) and Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz (1821 ) include Duodramen.
