Dürnkrut, Austria

Dürnkrut is a market town with 2254 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district Gaenserndorf in Lower Austria.

The place is best known for a historic battle in the summer of 1278 between the Bohemian King Ottokar and Rudolf I Habsburg, and by an earlier large sugar factory, which now serves the production of other commodities.

Geography

Dürnkrut is located on the eastern edge of the wine district, in March and thus on the border with Slovakia. The area of ​​the municipality covers 30.4 km ². 5.55 percent of the area is forested.

History

Dürnkrut

1045 Dürnkrut was created with its castle as a frontier settlement. In a property list of Freising Monastery from 1160 Dürnkrut is first mentioned. The Battle of Dürnkrut and Jedenspeigen on August 26, 1278 between the Bohemian King Ottokar II Przemysl and the Habsburg Rudolph I apply after the Battle of Hastings as the second largest battle of knights in history. Waidendorf

Under Emperor Joseph II Waidendorf became an independent parish in 1783. According to the government decree, the two places in the church today Velm - Götzdorf were assigned to the parish Waidendorf.

When a cholera epidemic in the years 1842 and 1855, 60 people including 11 children died. On November 24, 1878 a new school was opened which now serves as a nursery and is situated on the Waidendorferhauptstrasse. In 1886, the volunteer fire department Waidendorf was founded, which still has its firehouse at Sulzbach.

The census of 1934 showed 823 residents, who also carried out livestock census yielded 93 horses, 417 cattle, 480 pigs and 230 goats. At the last census in 2001 Waidendorf had only 532 inhabitants.
