E5 European long distance path

European Route E5 is a European long-distance hiking trail that leads from the Atlantic coast of France in Brittany over the Alps to Verona in Italy. Overall, the long-distance path is 3200 km long.

History

European Route E5 was opened together with the E1 ( North - Lake -Gotthard -Mediterranean ) on 2 July 1972 as a long-distance footpath Bodensee -Adria by the founder of the European Ramblers' Association George Fahrbach. At that time, six European long-distance hiking trails were planned in total.

Course

France

The E5 begins in Pointe du Raz, the most western point of mainland France, and runs at first along with the E9 ( from Portugal to Estonia). It leads to Le Faou along the Atlantic coast and then through the Monts d' Arree within the nature park Armorica. In Plestin -les- Greves to reach the coast of the English Channel. The trail continues across to Versailles, south of Paris over. Crosses in Fontainebleau E3 ( from the Black Sea to the Iberian Peninsula). Along the Seine, the trail leads to Dijon and crosses several times the E4 ( Cape St. Vincent in Portugal to Cyprus ). The path continues in the Vosges Mountains and crosses the E2 ( Galway on Ireland to Nice). Finally, the trail arrives after about 2100 miles through France to Switzerland.

Switzerland

North of Délemont the way through the foothills of the Swiss Jura towards Basel. From here the trail on mostly level route along the High Rhine further extends to the Rhine Falls in Neuhausen, where he again encounters the E4 and E1. The route leads to the south shores of the Lower and Upper Lake Constance over to Rheineck and the border with Austria.

Austria / Germany

In Bregenz to separate the layout help of E5 and E4, E5 runs on to Hittisau and on to Germany. Here the Alpine stage, which runs on a Europe's oldest long-distance hiking trails begin. The path leads through the village up to Colonel Kempten hut. At The Bottom Mädelejoch the limit is exceeded to Austria again. Through Germany lead only about 50 kilometers of the E5.

Back in Austria, the Allgäu Alps to be crossed. The path leads over the Lech Valley Alps to Memminger Hütte, where the path to Zams is again performed together with the E4. The trail continues through the Venet through the entire Pitztal or in a more recent variant on the 3030 m high Madatschjoch in Kaunergrat directly into the valley of the Pitztal to Mittelberg. On Geigenkamm between Pitztal and Oetztal the 3000 meters in altitude again exceeded shortly after the Braunschweiger Hut. About the Timmelsjoch by crossing the border to Italy, making the way through Austria approximately 175 km leads.

Italy

At the foot of Hochwart and Holy Cross head of the hiking trail high above the Passeiertal on the Hirzerhütte, past the Hirzer over the Meran hut and on to Bolzano in South Tyrol. ( Here ends a partial route of the E10). In the south of South Tyrol are white Horn Black Horn and along the way, which then leaves the German speaking area Gfrill at Salurn. Now it comes in Trentino in the Holy See past (see also Dürerweg ) to Levico Terme. From here the path leads to the Lavarone. About the Passo Coe, the Monte Maggio, the Passo Borcola reached the way the Pasubio and once again the height of 2,000 meters. Next, the path leads to Rifugio Lancia, about the Dente Austríaco and Dente Italiano Generale to Rifugio A. Papa. On the road of heroes (it. Strada degli Eroi ) leads the way down to the Passo Fugazze and on to the Passo Campogrosso. From here follows the last 2000s mountain group Carega group (small Dolomites ). On the Rifugio Fraccaroli ( 2239 m) is located. Through the Valley of the revolt E5 leads down to Giazza get right back up to get to the plateau of the Lessin Alps. Now the last kilometer to lead him by Erbezzo to the Natural Bridge Ponte di Veja, the Burago gorge and finally to Verona. For many walkers the E5 ends at the Arena of Verona, because there are no scenic walking trails, between Verona and Venice.
