Earl of Pembroke

Earl of Pembroke is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of England, named after the town of Pembroke and the nearby Castle Pembroke Castle in Wales, which is now supported by the Herbert family. In addition, the title of Marchioness of Pembroke was also awarded once.

Ancestral home of the family is Wilton House in Wiltshire.

Ceremonies

The title was awarded a total of ten times. For the first time this was done in 1138 by the King of England at Stephan Gilbert de Clare. With the extinction of the line of the house of Clare title became extinct 1,185.

The second ceremony took place just four years later to William Marshal, one of the most famous and best knight of his time. This had married the eldest daughter of the second Earl of the previous ceremony. The title became extinct in 1245, when the last grandchild died Marshalls.
