William belonged in 1215 to those twenty-five English barons revolted against King John and forced him on June 15, 1215 at Runnymede to sign the Magna Carta Liberatum. After his father's death in 1219 William was able to accept the extended family. As Earl Marshal and temporary counsel of England, he was one of the most powerful barons during the minority of King Henry III. , Including his second marriage had contributed. Matthew Paris suspected behind his death a poison attack of the regent, Hubert de Burgh.

About the year 1226 William gave the Verschronik L' Histoire de Guillaume le Maréchal in order that held the eventful life of his father for posterity.

Marriages

Marshall was married twice, first from 1214 with Alice de Bethune († 1216 ), daughter of Baldwin de Bethune, and from 1224 to Princess Eleanor Plantagenet, daughter of King John of Scotland. Both marriages were childless, so his younger brother, Richard Marshal, succeeded in heritage.
