Edgardo Codesal

Edgardo Enrique Codesal Méndez ( born June 2, 1951) is a former Mexican football referee.

A native of Uruguay took part in the 1990 World Cup in Italy as arbitrator. He headed this on June 14, 1990, the group match between Italy and the United States, the quarter-final match on 1 July 1990 between England and Cameroon. The highlight of his career was on July 8, 1990, the game lead the final of the 1990 World Cup between Germany and Argentina at the Olympic Stadium Rome, Rome.

When he Argentinian Pedro Monzón showed the red card in the 64th minute after a foul on Jürgen Klinsmann, this was the first field reference in the history of the World Cup finals. In the 86th minute, he also pointed Gustavo Dezotti after assaulting Jürgen Kohler of the field. Furthermore, was his penalty decision that led to the German winning goal in the 85th minute, as controversial as two previously each one against Germany and Argentina not given penalty.

Overall, he led three games in this World Cup. He was also employed in the three group matches between the Netherlands and Egypt on June 12, 1990 on June 16, 1990 between England and the Netherlands and on June 21, 1990 between England and Egypt as an assistant. Shortly after this World Cup, he retired as an active referee.

Codesal was also the CONCACAF Director of refereeing. He also failed to establish the umpires at the Women's World Championship in 1999 in the U.S. and was a member of the referee committee at the U- 20 World Cup in Nigeria, the Confederations Cup in Mexico and the U -17 World Cup in New Zealand.
