Elgin ( pronunciation: [ ɛlɡɪn ] ) is a city in Bastrop County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located at the junction of U.S. Highway 290 with Highway 95, about 25 km north of Bastrop in the north of the county in the central southeast Texas and has a total area of 12.2 km ² without significant water surface.

History

1871 moved the Houston and Texas Central Railway their tracks through this area and built a supply depot at the site of the present city named Glasscock. A year later, the place in Elgin was renamed in honor of Robert Morris Elgin, a surveyor of the railway. 1886 came through the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad added a further railway connection and Elgin became the freight center in the area for cotton and cattle.

1890, the population had grown to 1,100 people and at the beginning of the 20th century began with the coal into a nearby mine. In the 50s, a sausage factory was built, which reached about regional notoriety with their Elgin Hot Sausage and laid the foundation for today the city's nickname.
