Ellsworth is a village and the administrative seat of Pierce County in the western part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. In 2000, Ellsworth had 2909 inhabitants.
Geography
Ellsworth is located at 44 ° 43'57 " north latitude and 92 ° 28'48 " west longitude and extending over 9.55 km ², which consist exclusively of land area.
Ellsworth is located about 19 km north of the Mississippi River, which forms the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota.
In Ellsworth, U.S. Highways 10 and 63 and the Wisconsin Highways 65 and 72 meet together.
The nearest towns are the 22.6 km southern Red Wing in Minnesota, the 36.3 km West Hastings in Minnesota and 21.4 km northwest River Falls.
The Twin Cities ( Minneapolis and Saint Paul ) in Minnesota are 63.1 km in the north- west, Eau Claire 88.9 km to the east and Rochester in Minnesota 105 km to the south.
History
In 1857, the first white settler families came to the area. The place Ellsworth was founded in 1862 and raised in 1887 to an official community. 1885 laid the Omaha Railroad Depot east of the city on a, from which the village of East Ellsworth was born. The communities long existed independently of each other, but are now a grown together. Only the different zip code 53010 East Ellsworth is still valid today.
The town was named after Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth, who died in the American Civil War.
Demographic data
In the census of 2000 a population of 2,909 was determined. These distributed to 1,169 households in 755 families. The population density was 304.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 1,218 residential buildings, which corresponded to a housing density of 127.6 per square kilometer buildings.
The population was in 2000 from 98.2 percent White, 0.2 percent Indians, 0.1 percent Asian and 0.6 % other. 0.9 percent said to be descended from at least two of these groups. 1.1 percent of the population were Hispanics who belonged to the various of the aforementioned groups.
24.6 percent were under 18 years, 9.6 percent between 18 to 24, 28.5 percent of 25-44, 21.6 percent from 45 to 64 and 15.7 percent 65 and older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females were statistically 93.8 men in the over 18 -year-olds 85.9.
