Elwood is a village in Will County in the U.S. state of Illinois. In the year 2006 2300 inhabitants were counted.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the village of 7.0 square kilometers and has no water surfaces.

Demography

According to the census in 2000 lived in Elwood 1,620 people in 637 households, of which 461 families formed. The population density was 231 people per square kilometer. It 675 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 97.6 percent White, 0.6 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and 0.4 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.2 percent said the lineage of several ethnicities. 4.0 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 637 households out of which 34 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 61 percent were married couples living together, 8 percent were single mothers and 28 percent were non-families. 22 percent of all households and 8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size 2.99.

The population was spread out with 25.2 percent under the age of 18, 6.6 percent from 18 to 24, 33.5 percent 25-44 years, 21.1 percent from 45 to 64 years and 13.5 percent of 65 years or older. The average age (median) was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males per 100 adult women aged 18 and over, there were 94.1 males.

The median income for a household (median) was $ 53,125, and the median income for a family $ 60,707. Males have a median income of $ 47,396, women $ 27,946. The per capita income was $ 22,442. Under the poverty line, 4.3 percent of families and 4.6 percent of the population, including 2.7 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 11.9 percent of the population lived at the age of 65 years or older.

  • Bill Tuttle (1929-1998), an outfielder for the Minnesota Twins, the Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Athletics, was born in Elwood and grew up there.
