Erdal İnönü

Erdal İnönü ( born June 6, 1926 in Ankara, † October 31, 2007 in Houston, Texas) was a Turkish physicist and politician. From March to October 1995, he was Foreign Minister of Turkey.

Life

Erdal İnönü was the son of İsmet İnönü and Mevhibe İnönü (* 1897, † 7 February 1992).

İnönü graduated from the elementary and middle school and secondary school in Ankara, graduated from Ankara University and received his doctorate in 1951 at the California Institute of Technology. His most famous contribution to theoretical physics is the method of Inönü -Wigner contractions (group contractions) of 1953 along with Eugene Wigner, establish the relationship between Lie algebras. From 1964 to 1974 he was professor of physics at METU in Ankara. Later he was also dean and member of the Rectorate of the University. From 1974 to 1983 he was professor of physics at the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. İnönü has also held offices at NATO and UNESCO.

As of 1983, İnönü operated in Turkish politics and was co-founder of Sosyal Demokrasi Partisi. The SODEP merged with the Social Democratic Populist to Halkçı Parti Party ( SHP). On 30 May 1986, he succeeds Aydın Güven Gürkan as chairman of the SHP, which he led until 11 September 1993. He was succeeded by Murat Karayalcin.

In elections in 1986 İnönü became a deputy of the constituency İzmir. In 1987, the mandate in the regular election was confirmed. 1991 was the SHP with the DYP coalition government in which İnönü was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State. In 1993, the SHP merged this time with the CHP. In 1995, İnönü was appointed Foreign Minister and held that post from March to October 1995.

İnönü died on 31 October 2007 in Houston.
