Ernst Hoppenberg

Ernst Hoppenberg ( born July 26, 1878 in Bremen, † September 29, 1937 Kirn ) was a successful German swimmer

Ernst Hoppenberg was for his club twice Bremen 1895 German Champion, 100m backstroke at the German Championships in 1898 and about 100 m freestyle at the German Championships 1899.

At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900, he was the 200 m backstroke in 2:47,0 minutes on the first place. He also took 200 m swim team together with Max Hainle, Max Beautiful, Julius Frey and Herbert von Petersdorff the first place. In water polo, he failed, however, with the German team in the quarter- final against France. The reason for the successful swim was that his father Georg Hoppenberg was owner of the destroyed in the Second World War Bremer Breitenwegbades.

Ernst Hoppenberg died in 1937 as a result of a car accident. In 1988 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the international swimming sport.
