Eschert

Eschert is a municipality in the administrative district in the canton of Bern Bernese Jura in Switzerland. The former German name Escherz is no longer used today.

Geography

Eschert is located on 596 m above sea level. M., 2 km east of the town Moutier (air line). The village is located on a ridge at the northern foot of the Jura range Graitery, in Juralängstal of Moutier, which also bears the name of Grand Val.

The area of ​​6.6 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Grand Val The northern boundary of Eschert most forms of Bach La Raus, which drains the valley west to the Birs. In a small corner of the area comes to the lower southern slopes of the elevating on the northern side of Mont Raimeux. Population

With 366 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Eschert one of the smaller communities of the Bernese Jura. Of the 83.7 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 8.2 % and 2.8 % Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Eschert amounted in 1850 to 208 residents in 1900 to 295 inhabitants. Economy

Traffic

The municipality can be reached by a short spur road that branches off from the main road Moutier -Balsthal. Currently, the A16 motorway constructed in the area of Moutier, which also touches on the municipal territory of Eschert. History

The first written mention of Eschert took place in 1179 under the name Escert, later also appears the name Echert. The village was under until the end of the 18th century, the provost Moutier- Grandval. In 1733, many houses were a village destroyed by fire. From 1797 to 1815 Eschert belonged to France and was initially part of the Département du Mont- Terrible, which was connected to the 1800 Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern to the district of Moutier. Attractions

In the rural village there are some well-preserved farmhouses and wooden granary from the 17th to the 19th century. Eschert has no church of its own, it belongs to the parish Grandval.
