Evelyn Lear

Evelyn Lear ( born Evelyn Shulman, born January 8, 1926 in Brooklyn, † July 1, 2012 in Sandy Spring, at Rockford, Maryland) was an American opera singer (soprano ).

Career

Evelyn Lear initially studied piano and horn, but finally singing at the Juilliard School in New York City. Your first concerts she gave in America, but then came up with her ​​husband, the bass-baritone Thomas Stewart, to Germany, where they further developed itself at the Berlin Academy of Music. In 1959 she sang at the Royal Festival Hall in London, the " Four Last Songs" by Richard Strauss.

In the same year she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in Berlin as a composer in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos. Thus began a great career at this institution, which later became Deutsche Oper Berlin. Guest performances by the singer at the State Operas of Vienna and Munich brought their brilliant successes. At the Salzburg Festival she proved to be a great interpreter of Mozart. In 1963 she had great success at the Vienna Festival as Lulu in a concert performance of the eponymous opera by Alban Berg, which she sang in the scenic first performance in Vienna as well as in a production directed by Gustav Rudolf Sellner in Berlin later, with Dietrich Fischer- Dieskau as doctor Schön under the baton of Karl Böhm. In addition, Lear was also known as Marie in Berg's Wozzeck and as an operetta diva, eg at the Bregenz Festival as Hanna Glawari Franz Lehar's The Merry Widow in very successful.
