Ferit Melen

Ferit Melen Sadi (* 1906 in Van, † September 3, 1988 in Ankara) was a Turkish politician and former Prime Minister of Turkey.

The elementary and middle school, he graduated in Van. In 1928, he graduated from high school in Bursa. In July 1931 he graduated from the Faculty of Political Science at the Ankara Üniversitesi. On 26 August 1931 he began to work as a civil servant in Bursa. As of 25 October 1932, he worked as an assistant financial inspector. On January 1, 1936, he was appointed inspector of the first class to the Inspector of the fourth class on July 14, 1939 Inspector of the third class, on January 26, 1940 Inspector of the second class, and on 28 January 1943. His military service he served as an ensign from between 1 May 1940 and 27 November 1941. For one year Melen was sent to Paris for research on the French Treasury. On 29 November 1943 he was appointed Director General for motor vehicle taxes. On June 30, 1946 Melen was appointed Director General of income.

In the elections to IX. Legislature, he was elected as a deputy of the province of Van in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. On September 30, 1959, he was retired. In the XI. Parliament, he was re-elected deputies of the province of Van. For the Constituent Assembly, he was a founding member of the Van province. In the IX. and X. İnönü government, he was Minister of Finance without parliamentary mandate. Between 7 June 1964 and 14 October 1979, he was a senator for the province of Van. In 1968 he left the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi ( CHP) and was a founding member of Güven Partisi. In the First and Second Erim government, he was Minister of Defence between 1972 to 26 March 1971 and 22 May. On May 22, 1972, he was appointed Prime Minister. In the IV Demirel government, he was again on March 31, 1975 Secretary of Defense. On 12 July 1980 he was chosen by the President to the Senate. This function ended on September 12, 1980 a military coup. In the parliamentary elections of 1983 he was elected one last time to the deputies of the province of Van.

His grave is located on the Cebeci - Asri Cemetery.

The Vans airport is named after him.
