Field hockey at the 1952 Summer Olympics

In the XV. 1952 Olympics in Helsinki was held a competition in hockey (men). The number of participants was determined by the IOC in 1950, including the host Finland to a maximum of twelve. The matches of the main tournament took place at the Velodrome.

Tournament mode

The hockey world governing body FIH created a ranking of the 16 potential participants: 1 India, Pakistan 2, 3 The Netherlands, 4th UK, Belgium 5, 6 Denmark, 7 France, 8 Spain, 9 Switzerland 10 Argentina 11 Austria, 12 USA, 13 Finland, as well as runners- 1 Germany, 2 in Italy, Poland 3. After rejections from Spain, Denmark, Argentina and the USA, all other nations could participate in the tournament.

The twelve participants were playing in the knock-out system of the medals. The four byes in the first round were the first four of the rank list prepared by the FIH. The winners of the preliminary round and the four seeded played the quarter-finals, the winners of the quarter-finals came into the semi-finals. The losers of the semifinals played for the bronze medal, the winner of gold.

Other Placement matches - also in the knockout system - have taken place, but are not listed in the official IOC report. In the consolation round 1 of the losers of the quarter-finals played against the loser of the previous round. The winners played in the consolation round 2, then the winners the losers playing for 5th to 7th place The losers of the consolation round 1 remained unplaziert.
